DISCOVER staff work directly with parents in situations needing special recommendations. Sometimes observing the classroom and working with the teacher to provide a more effective learning environment can make all the difference to a child’s development and academic success. Finding the child’s strengths and teaching him or her how to use them to compensate for weaknesses often minimizes the effects of learning disabilities. Hyperactivity and other ADHD- related issues are common concerns for parents and often can be addressed in a drug-free manner using what we call “active learning”. In some cases behavior problems and lack of performance in school stem from the child having high abilities that are not being sufficiently challenged in the classroom. When this is true, DISCOVER staff works with the teacher and parents to change the learning environment, to one that is both interesting and filled with “choice”, allowing the child to participate in determining the most effective learning strategies and pace.
If you feel your child is struggling in school but are not sure why, or what you can do to make a real difference, contact the DISCOVER office and arrange a personalized evaluation. In many cases the DISCOVER Assessment provides a good starting point for knowing how to proceed. But it’s important to follow up on the Assessment results and make changes, both at home and in the classroom, that will best fit the child’s natural abilities and needs. Remember, these changes can be made and often are relatively simple. Sometimes teachers are not well equipped to deal with disruptive behavior or situations that vary from their realm of experience. They also appreciate learning techniques that work. We recommend that you address these issues at the youngest practical age, to prevent the child from falling behind.
In Tucson: $100 per hour or $50 per hour in combination with an order for one of the DISCOVER Assessment services.
On-site in your school or community: Consultation involving travel is charged at the standard daily rates ($800 for a DISCOVER staff member or $1,000 for Dr. Maker) plus travel expenses, unless the DISCOVER representative is on-site already in connection with the performance of another DISCOVER service. In this case, the same hourly rates apply and no travel expenses are charged (if they have been covered already by the other entity receiving services).
